Ladies in White Scatters Ashes in These Regions Public lands in the United States of America total over 640 million acres. These acres are managed in large part by the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, National Park System, National Wildlife Refuge System, and also the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (water recreation). In Montana, our nine national forests alone total nearly 20 million acres with 3.4 million acres of that protected as wilderness. In addition, the Bureau of Land Management manages nearly 8 million "surface acres." Many of these lands are untouched, remaining much as they were when Lewis and Clark made their historic trip west in 1804. The same vast expanses of wild lands that we read about in their journals from two centuries ago can still be seen today. Ladies in White has its headquarters in the west-central region of Montana where we are surrounded by parts or all of four national forests. They are: Lolo National Forest (all but the northern section) Currently, we work on ranches and conservation easements that border National Forests and Parks. Scattering sites may overlook your favorite public lands, or provide views into wilderness areas. Year by year, we will expand our scattering options. Knowing these regions and the national forests within them will help you fill out your Preferences Worksheet.
